Secret Draft Leak Proves More Damaging Than ‘Climategate’ As Talks Are Suspended
The leakage of an alternative negotiations draft has put the credibility of the Conference of Parties in question. The leaked draft was prepared by so called ‘Circle of Commitment’ nations which includes at least the United States, the United Kingdom and Denmark. The draft took final shape just before the COP15 meeting and only a handful of countries had knowledge of its existence, presumably none were developing countries.
One of the first issues the UNFCCC officials and many negotiators had to give clarifications about on the very first day for the Copenhagen Climate Conference was the ‘Climategate’ issue - leakage of controversial email exchanges between climate scientists which, according to some people, contained ‘tweaked’ climate data to convince the world about global warming and climate change. The negotiators and scientists rejected the accusations of the ‘Climategate’ scandal by pointing out the suspicious timing of the realize of the emails claiming that it was the work people who wanted to derail the climate deal but the parties are themselves to blame for this latest fiasco.
